On Tuesday, March 26, voters approved a $16,623,404 proposal that will address critical infrastructure issues, as well as a $10,925,736 proposition that will update the district’s current aging and out-of-compliance transportation facility.

The first measure passed by 2,435-1,567. The second passed by 2,013-1977. It was the third time similar proposals have been brought to vote, with the first two failing.

With both propositions approved, it is expected to cost taxpayers an estimated $11.04 per year.

Improvements include roof replacements at all five school buildings, which will total approximately $15 million. There will also be improvements made at the middle school library to modernize it. There will also be motions made to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act in select areas of some schools.

According to the district, “the current transportation facility located next to the Kent Elementary School, was built in the 1960s to accommodate many fewer buses and maintenance vehicles than the 120 that (the district) has today.

“The space for maintenance is inadequate to properly work on more than one bus at once. In addition, there is no room in the maintenance garage to lift buses should the need arise. That work is currently performed outside year-round, regardless of the weather, or in the one indoor bay that has a maintenance pit.”

Now that the near $11 million capital bond has been approved, they intend to construct a new facility with safer working conditions. It will also bring the facility into compliance with the NYS DEC.
